Designing Your Bedroom With Feng Shui In Mind

A feng shui bedroom is a balanced and peaceful atmosphere that fosters a healthier night’s rest. However, contrary to general belief, its not a Chinese interior design idea or relevant to any belief system. The words translate to “wind water.”

According to P.K. Odle, executive director of the renowned American Feng Shui Institute and master consultant, “Just like gravity, feng shui influences exist in natural and man-made environments. Whether you believe it or not, they are already affecting your daily life.”

Its not about doing; it is something that’s everywhere. It influences you in ways you may not even recognize. “All buildings have a unique energy blueprint from the moment they are built, which you can think of as the building’s DNA sequence,” Odle says.

Feng shui As An Art And Science

Classical Feng shui is a sister science to acupuncture and an art. “Both ancient Chinese sciences have been improving people’s lives for centuries and are based on the Yi Jing or Book of Changeswhich acknowledges that everything is energy,” Odle says. “Qi is the Chinese word for the universal lifeforce energy that is in a constant state of change.”

As per Odle, the science part of feng shui is the time-tested calculation methods which reveal the hidden energy blueprint of a building, which depends upon both its magnetic orientation in addition to when it was constructed. “These repeatable energy combinations have predictable consequences on the lives of the building’s occupants due to prolonged exposure to them. And as with all things in life, there is a mixture of supportive and harmful energy combinations within every building,” she says.

The art of feng shui narrates more furniture and decorating to create favorable flow. After all, a room with unstable energy can affect our relationships, health, and finances more than we could probably guess.

Here are fantastic feng shui bedroom guidelines rules to follow when decorating your bedrooms in your home.

Feng Shui Bedroom Principles

Proper positioning of furniture and accessories is in the heart of developing a feng shui bedroom. This is because each building has a hidden section grid often called the Bague, such as a tic-tac-toe game. “The feng shui blueprint grid divides the interior width and depth by three,” Odle says. “These energy grid lines are like unseen beams that can cause health problems in the area of the body that is bisected between two sections of the energy grid.”

If there is one main decorating item to avoid in a feng shui bedroom design, it’s to omit exposed beams on your ceiling. But if your bedroom has exposed beams, be sure your bed and other occupied furniture is away from them.

Keeping your bedroom organized and clean is also essential to good feng shui. An untidy bedroom is not suitable for energy flow, even if all your furniture is in the ideal place. So commit to maintaining a neat and clean space.

Correct Bed Positioning is Vital To a Feng Shui Bedroom

An excellent general rule is to make sure the top of your mind is near a solid wall. “Or at least toward a wall with a closed window that doesn’t have any drafts. This position is to reduce the movement of Qi or energy above your head, so you will have a restful night’s sleep,” Odle explains

Your headboard should match against your wall. Though realistically, floor molding may create a little bit of separation, so try to keep your bed as near the wall as you can.

But if for any reason your mattress can’t fit up against a wall, Odle recommends being mindful of having the door closed, or at the very least, a few inches ajar, once you’re laying in bed.

The bed you choose is also essential. A solidly upholstered headboard or solid wood frame is best for feng shui. Headboards with open bars, numerous panels,  or beds with built-in storage or shelving should be shunned.

Optimal Feng Shui Bedroom Shades

To pick the best colors for your room, Odle recommends having space professionally assessed. However, avoiding primary colors–specifically reds, purples, blues, and black–is a good rule of thumb. “They can trigger major problems depending on the feng shui energies of the space,” she explains.

So if you are redecorating, look for bedding, furniture, and accessories which are neutral in color. If you can change one part of the space, switch up your bedding. Start looking for neutrals which are pacifying without being dull, which will be available in trendy muted colors of blue, pink, and taupe, among other colors.

Bedroom Principles Regarding Mirrors

While most of us prefer to maintain mirrors in the bedroom, a Feng Shui bedroom shouldn’t have one. One explains that since mirrors reflect light, it makes the energies of the bedroom quite active or yang. “This causes delays in going to sleep after lights out, because you are waiting for the bedroom’s energies to become more still, or yin.”

Another importance of mirrors in the bedroom is that depending upon your date of birth and gender; they could trigger what is called your own “lonely pillow” direction. Odle says this can influence your relationships, hindering them from improving and result in you sleeping alone.

Maintain Energy With Elemental Remedies

Another part of designing a feng shui bedroom is achieving the essential elemental solutions as accessories to match the space. The remedies are the five elements: plants for wood, water features,  fire colors (purples and reds), and objects made of metal or earth.

But, Odle says that it’s never about having all five of the components represented in every room. “The mathematical calculations reveal which element is required to optimize the existing unseen energy combination.”
